West Ham and Tottenham can’t compete with ‘an insane offer’ for forgotten Chelsea man

Brad Pinard

Fiorentina have confirmed they have made an ‘insane’ offer for Chelsea winger Mo Salah.

The Egyptian is likely to leave Chelsea this summer and a Premier League stay with either West Ham or Spurs had been linked.
However, with Fiorentina going all out to sign the man who shined on loan with them last season, it looks as though Italy will be the destination for the Blues.

Club director Vincenzo Guerini confirmed the offer and expects a decision soon. “I tell the fans that the club made an insane offer to Salah,”

Vincenzo Guerini said. “If any player, not just Salah, turned down a proposal like that, then it’s best he doesn’t stay at Fiorentina. However, I think Salah will accept.

“He made a huge impact with us, so it’s normal that he should receive calls from elsewhere. “He wants to earn more, but Fiorentina made a truly important proposal.”

Chelsea play Fiorentina in a pre-season friendly at Stamford Bridge a week before the Premier League season kicks off.

Leicester consider £7m Stewart Downing bid

Nigel Pearson wants to strengthen ahead of next season and is considering moves for Steward Downing, Steven Nzonzi and Tranquillo Barnetta

By John Percy

Nigel Pearson is considering a £7million bid for Stewart Downing after West Ham United’s decision to put the England international up for sale.

Downing will be a surprise casualty at West Ham this summer and Leicester have joined the race to sign the winger after making an inquiry this week.

Sunderland have already failed with a £5million offer while Middesbrough, Downing’s former club, are also weighing up an ambitious move despite being in the Championship.

But Leicester’s interest in Downing is serious and Pearson is determined to build a competitive squad this summer as he bids to avoid another nail-biting relegation battle.

West Ham are seeking a fee of around £7million plus add-ons but that is well within Leicester’s budget, paying a similar figure for long-term target Shinji Okazaki, the Japan international, this week.

Downing will be 31 next month and West Ham, who are close to resigning Alex Song and Carl Jenkinson, are prepared to offload him.

West Ham set to pip Everton in race for £12million Italy defender Angelo Ogbonna

By Neil Moxley

The Juventus man had been earmarked by Toffees boss Roberto Martinez but West Ham have made their move and want him to partner Winston Reid next season

West Ham's busy summer is set to continue with the capture of Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna, writes Neil Moxley in the Sunday People.

The Hammers have leapt in front of Everton in the race for the Italian international ahead of their final season at Upton Park.

Since the end of the last Premier League campaign, the club has appointed new boss Slaven Bilic and added French winger Dimitri Payet to the squad following a £10.7million move from Marseille.

And now, according to sources in Italy, the club is set to brush off an approach from the Toffees to land the defender in a deal valued at £12m.

Everton boss Roberton Martinez wanted the big stopper as a replacement for Sylvain Distin – who has signed a deal with Bournemouth as revealed by Sunday People Sport.

But West Ham are keen to partner the centre-half with Winston Reid as their Europa League campaign gets underway this Thursday with the visit of Andorran minnows FC Lusitans.

The club has been given a boost with the news this week that midfielder Alex Song can leave Barcelona on a free – although they will face rivals for his services from Southampton.

If that does not materialise, then Bilic is likely to turn his attention to his former Turkish club Besiktas with Tolgay Arslan, a 24-year-old midfielder, on the radar.

However, the deal to land Ogbonna is well underway – and he is unlikely to be the only new face at Chadwell Heath with Bilic set to add at least one of his former team-mates to the backroom staff. The Croatian has held talks with both John Hartson and Steve Lomas over coaching roles.

Billic wants to be reunited with British-based coaches who know the east London club inside out.

Former Wales striker Hartson, now a media pundit, is in line to replace Teddy Sheringham as the Irons’ forwards coach.

Lomas, 41, also spent time with Billic during his long stay at West Ham and is mulling over an approach to join the coaching set-up.

Meanwhile, one player who appears to be deemed surplus to requirements is England ace Stewart Downing.

He has offers on the table from all three clubs in the North East – with Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson as eager as any to recruit a player who made his name on Teesside.

Sunderland have had an initial £5m offer rejected and now Leicester City have been alerted to the availability of the winger.

Gibson is unlikely to win the battle as Downing, 30, wants to stay in the Premier League and now has firm offers on the table.

Report: West Ham plot move for Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa

Former Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa is interesting West Ham.

Dan Coombs

West Ham United are considering a move for Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa, report The Times.

The 32-year-old is an option if the Hammers fall short in their attempts to prise England under-21 right-back Carl Jenkinson from Arsenal, either on loan or permanently.

He has been at Real since 2009, having been at Liverpool for two-and-a-half seasons, and has 58 caps for the Spanish national side, although none of these have come since 2013.

Could it happen?

Arbeloa has fallen down the pecking order at Real at right-back, already behind Dani Cavajhal, and likely also Danilo, the club's expensive new signing from Porto.

He played 35 games in all competitions, but just 22 came in La Liga, with many from the bench, accumulating just 1,100 minutes of football.

The one element in Arbeloa's favour at Real is new boss Rafa Benitez, who managed him at Liverpool - but will also want to do best by the player and could sell if the Spaniard wants out.

Benitez sold him once before, and with Arbeloa having just one year remaining on his Real Madrid contract, this summer provides a chance to cash in while they can.

He was a favourite of Jose Mourinho at Real, and Spanish newspaper Marca reported only in April that Arbeloa was a possible target for Chelsea.
